So You Want To Play Guitar, Huh?

August 5th, 2009 by Jeff Vivrette

I remember when I first decided I wanted to learn to play guitar. I was 11 years old and my sister and her boyfriend had just taken me to my first concert. Aerosmith was playing with AC/DC opening the show for them. I was  mesmerized with Joe Perry’s playing and the sound of his guitar. I just had to learn how to do this!

It was just about a month later that got my first guitar for my 12th birthday. I remember not even knowing that I had to push the strings down onto the fretboard with my fingers!

Man I had a long way to go!

Fast forward a few years (or was that 30 years?) and hear comes the game “Guitar Hero” and an entire generation of kids that had never even heard of Aerosmith (or Joe Perry). Now they want to learn how to play guitar so they can play those same cool licks that made me want to start playing all those years before.

No blue, green, red or yellow buttons here folks!

When I tried Guitar Hero for the first time, I thought I was going just beat the heck out of my son, my daughter and their friends. Heck, I’ve been playing guitar longer than they’ve been alive, how could I not dominate in a game where the goal is to, well…. Play guitar!! Let me just say I was humbled very quickly!

Oh, but revenge can be so sweet and I was more than willing to let them know that, sure, they whipped my behind in Guitar Hero, but I can play circles around them on a real guitar! They were so scared they acted like they didn’t even hear me and just kept playing! My wife says they ignored me and could care less but I know they were scared senseless!

So what does all of this have to do with YOU learning to play guitar?

Well, if you have ever played Guitar Hero and wondered what it’s like to not just play Guitar Hero but to actually BE a Guitar Hero, then you’ve come to the right place!

You too can learn to run circles around all of your non-guitar playing friends when they start to brag about how good they are on Guitar Hero. Heck, why not get them to pick up a guitar and join you in guitar lessons at Vivrette Guitar Academy so you can start a band. Who knows, maybe one day your songs will end up being played on Guitar Hero!
